The Breastfeeders checklist

It’s an artform not a science as each baby and mother combination is different but follow our checklist to make sure both you and your baby are on the right tracks:

  • Are you positioned correctly is your baby’s chest pressed against yours?
  • Can you hear him or her swallowing in short and longer gulps?
  • Are you feeling a tingling sensations?
  • Is your baby’s jaw moving?
  • Are your childs ears wiggling in time with their jaw moving?
  • Is his or her mouth wide open?
  • Is their bottom lip turned out?
  • Is there more breast in your baby’s mouth below the nipple than above?
  • Does the let-down reflex make your breast leak?

If you notice any of the following during feeding time, you may need to get check your positioning:

  • Your baby’s lips look as though he is sucking on a straw
  • Their cheeks are sucked in more than usual
  • Clicking noises coming from the baby’s mouth
  • If it is painful throughout the feeding process.
